It could be a bad Equation Editor. It could also be a corrupted
equation. I'd suggest (if you haven't done this already) working
through the procedures listed in the "How to Identify Corrupted
Graphics" and "How to Repair a Graphic Manually" sections of the
article I referenced. So you won't have to reference my original
reply, this is the link to the article:

Regarding failures in the embedding information, the technique
you suggest of cutting a suspect equation to the clipboard,
opening the equation editor and then pasting the equation back
in was certainly revealing. Word 2000 came up with 'Equation
not found' and 'equation too long to convert'. Unfortunately
when
I then retype the equation from scratch I get exactly the same
problem. I suspect that I have a corrupt version of the
Equation Editor and will need to re-install it.

THIS worked, found all the normal.* and whacked them (deleted), uninstalled
the whole thing, deleted the entire office 12 (2007) directory, and all other
ofc 2007 appls... reinstalled office 2007 and it WORKS. Your suggestion
worked. All the repair and reinstalls create additional normal templates and
something broke. Spell checker now shows squiggly red lines under 4eur7yu ....

If so, and if deleting normal.* didn't fix the problem, the likely culprit
is a corrupted registry entry. Usually, it's the Data key. Since this is
Word 2007, you'd need to adjust the location for Office 12 and proceed
otherwise as shown here:

I concur. There is a little problem with LISTNUM fields (I discovered it
with the LEGALDEFAULT option.) Deleting a character immediately to the left
of the field causes the field to reset to 1.1….
There are many ways to restart the list correctly. The most simple is to
copy the number and paste it immediately to its right. Then delete the copy
you just made (on the right), and the list is re-initialized.

Not sure what you are referring to here...
The way to restart a list consisting of LISTNUM fields is to add the \s
switch to the appropriate item.
For instructions on restarting a multilevel list with a LISTNUM field, see

Explanation: I have a single list of headings in my document. I want them
to be listed quite normally in a legal way. When I delete a character (a
return usually) before the LISTNUM, the number that showed, say 4.6, now gets
reset to 1.1.
I did more tests this morning, and it seems that the deletion process does
not always alter the LISTNUM. Actually, the more you try to make it happen
in a document, the more stable fields get, which is great. I'm yet have to
pinpoint an infailible scenario that will reproduce the problem.
Note: This report is not critical. I even noticed that just moving the
cursor with the arrow keys over the field can bring it back to its normal
count (say from 1.1 to 4.6 in our example). Many other operations also tend
to return LISTNUM fields to the correct count, like pasting stuff downstream.

OK, I've made a bit of progress and found the culprit. Here's the
problem
report I pulled up under Problem Reports and Solutions.
Problem signature
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: WINWORD.EXE
Application Version: 10.0.2627.0
Application Timestamp: 3a9cdbe7
Fault Module Name: PROPSYS.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Fault Module Timestamp: 4549bd96
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0000a8f9
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
The villain is PROPSYS.dll
I haven't figured out how to fix it yet.
I have tried uninstalling Office XP and Open Office and then
reinstalling
only Office XP as you suggested, but I still have the same problem with
it.
I brought the computer home today so I could use my broadband
connection.
I'm currently downloading all the updates to Vista that Microsoft says
I
need. We'll see if that does anything.- Hide quoted text -

You know what? It's just way way way too late in the history of
personal computers for people to have to screw with this sort of
thing. Ten years ago Bill Gates was talking about applicance
computers. They turn on instantly, are as reliable as your
television, never blue screen. It hasn't happened. Some kind of
weird freaks must have hijacked development at Microsoft. They had 5
years and gigabucks to make Windows work better. Instead they made it
work worse.
If the early eighties Microsoft release of DOS 3.0 and the early
nineties release of Windows 3.1 are what propelled Microsoft to
success, the release of Vista and the incredibly pitiful Office 2007
will be what destroy Microsoft or at least marginalize it. Don't
blame Google. Microsoft is in self destruct mode.

Well, LISTNUM fields used in conjunction with paragraph numbering will
affect, and be affected by, the paragraph numbering, so what you are seeing
is not necessarily a sign that something strange is going on...
Note that you can press Alt+F9 to show/hide the field codes, and you can
edit field codes to explicitly have the desired level and starting value, if
necessary. For example, the following field:
{ LISTNUM \l 1 \s 1 }
sets the numbering of level 1 to "1" (or "A" etc. depending on the type of
list).

You are not alone on this one. I have the exact same message (msgr??32.dll)
all the time. I do not know what it means or why it happens. It seems to be
completely random. Contrary to what many will say it has absolutely nothing
to do with Tools > Language > Set Language... Instead, go to
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=273965 and look at "Method 4". It is the
only one that will work. Copying directly into a new Word Document will not
work as it seems to retain the previous attributes (disabled spell check);
there has to be another step in between (in this example, Notepad).
