Have you checked Task Manager, Performance Tab, you should see the percentage

Just curious, did you do a Fresh install or an Upgrade? I noticed you have

I have run all of Microsoft's OS and even a couple of Linux. Never
have any caused me as much stress as Vista.
I was lucky to actually boot successfully one time out of ten. The PC
would lock at various stages even after logging in. And that was after
a fresh install with no third party drivers or software
I found it significantly slower than XP Pro and don't get me started
on the ridiculous security settings and warnings. It would suit users
with either little common sense or paranoia.
I hoped my PC would have made the experience of Vista a rewarding one
but it didn't. I ran the compatibility test prior to upgrade and the
only problem highlighted was with Nero burning software. After install
my PC was rated as 5.
Maybe wait for a SP (there has to be one) before you take the plunge.
I am now running XP Pro again and its perfect.

|
|
people don't realize that the wireless frequency is shared w/ cordless
phones, and microwave ovens often generate interferrence. If your drop
outs occur when either of these devices are in-use in your house then
that's the culprit. Sometime a neighbor's cordless phone can mess you up.
And some cordless phones don't even need to be in-use to cause issues,
just having them in the house can mess it up (better ones will shut down
xmissions when the phone is in the cradle). To verify, unplug from the
wall and remove the battery from the handset.
a second problem area is power management. go into the properties page
for your wireless adapter and check it for power management settings.
Change it to "Constantly Awake Mode", or "Maximum Power Mode", or
something like that. Laptop adapters often dial down the power until the
signal drops out, and let up it a little. This can happen over and over
as it tries to minimize its power usage. |

Personal opinion, but ... I don't think anything is wrong with your hard
drive other than you either still have malware on it, or files are corrupted
(highly likely). So, with any luck, you'll now end up with a 2-drive system
unless you decide to return the drive after things are fixed.
Malke and Rock gave you -excellent- advice you should follow so I won't
parrot them.
The quickest solution for you is probably to back up any important files you
created (pics, letters, etc), be sure to backup up Documents and Settings
also. If you've kept all your created files in My Documents subfolders, all
you have to back up is Documents and Settings and all its subfolders.
Disconnect from the internet, unplug peripherals:
Then reinstall the operating system from scratch.
A google search will get you lots of step by step instructions on how to
reinstall XP or better yet, if instructions came with your PC, use those.
It's mostly straight forward but it's different for different machines.
The Dell site has a lot of info on this, too under the Support area.
Once installed, reinstall your antivirus and spyware apps, connect to the
'net, and download all the updates for XP as desired.
If you should accidentally download IE7 in the process, just use
Add/Remove to take it off, and you'll be back to IE6.

Is it a commercial/OEM PC ? ( Gateway, HP, Dell ) if so you can
locate it's unique Service Tag # and use that on the vendor's web
site to get it's original factory configuration. The information should
be on the back of a desktop or on the bottom of a notebook. All
OEM PCs are required to place the Windows COA ( Certificate
of Authenticity ) on the physical case. This will have your product
key for installing XP.
If not a major OEM PC ( But an independent shop built PC) did
your neighbor provide the original disks/documentation ? Instead
of a repair or in-place upgrade you really need to restore it to it's
factory condition. ALL OEMs are required to provide a means of
restoring a PC to it's original/delivered state.

I've been through a lot since I posted this request, but am now considering
this again. Yes, I want to do the upgrade, but the last time I tried I ran
into a technical problem. My XP Pro install disc complained that the XP
Home installation on the computer already was NEWER than the Pro version.
Therefore it stopped the upgrade. Did not even give me the chance to
override.
Any way around this?

It's the easiest and most-likely successful of all possible upgrades,
since so little has to be changed.
As always, though, when you take a big step like an operating system
upgrade, be sure you first have a backup of anything you can't afford to
lose, just in case something goes wrong.
But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home and
Professional are identical except that Professional includes a few
features (mostly related to security and networking) missing from Home?
Most home
users (even those with home networks) don't need and would never use these
extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.
For details go to
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp
Also note another point, not included in any of the above: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

Presumably your Home installation has SP2 and the CD is only SP1. Two
options - either uninstall SP2 from your Home installation just prior to
doing the upgrade, or slipstream your Pro CD to include SP2. There are many
google references on how to do this....

Slipstreaming would be the preferable option, since Martin will then have a
