Dell should have supplied you with the ability to restore your computer to
its factory condition. This could have been a special partition on the hard
drive or a CD.
If you lost whatever medium on which the OS was supplied, you're going to
have to obtain another (but not from Microsoft). |

USB ports. If
your USB controller or USB hub is limited to 500 milliamps of power

Is this really correct, I thought every computer was limited this

have all worked off of a single USB port on a couple of different desktop
machines and at least 3 different brand laptops. On one other laptop
(older), I needed an external power supply - used one from an old USB 1.1
hub.
Try it first - if it doesn't spin up reliably (that is the critical part,
as usually once they spin up the power requirement goes down), you may
need a cable to connect a second USB port to the drive (only used for
power, not data), or an external power supply.
|
Taxed Mind:
Our experience with 2 1/2" USB external HDDs parallels that of "he". While
it is true that many, if not most, of these 2 1/2" external HDDs will draw
current greater than the 500 mA specified for a USB 2.0 port, we have found
that in the majority of cases the 2 1/2" USBEHDs will work reliably
connected to a single USB port even without an external power supply.
But as "he" also points out. Not always. There *will* be cases where one
would need an external PS for the device or the USB dual-head cable (so as
to connect the device to two USB ports) similar to the WD "Power Booster
Cable" you referred to in order for the device to properly function.
So if you're set about using such a device but aren't interested in the
add'l expense, and even annoyance, of purchasing either an external PS or
the dual-head cable, then I would suggest you purchase the WD Passport
device locally with the understanding from your local dealer that you will
have return privileges should the device not properly operate with your
machine without having to purchase those accessories.
Other than that, simply consider a "normal" 3 1/2" USBEHD device which
includes its own PS.

Is this because I have SP2 (I'm going to reinstall SP-2 as well)

Is it warning me that I'd lose data files or is it just referring to
behind the scenes XP files (that I want to be reinitialized to
possibly speed up my system)? |

Hi Xandros,
Many thanks for precise and prompt answer. I'll follow your suggestion.
By the way, is there any reason for me to want an XP CD other than being
able to use the Recovery Console? I don't think I'll need the ability to
reinstall the OS without destroying my installed programs and date: I
image the system regularly.
Thanks again,

That's the sloppy usage that is unfortunately becoming all too common.
All dictionaries do not agree, and unfortunately some (fortunately
only some) are very permissive with respect to commonly heard misuse
like this.
The whole reason for the existence of the word "acronym" is to
distinguish such abbreviations from other kinds of abbreviations. Blur
that distinction, call all abbreviations acronyms, and you don't need
the word at all.
| Quote: | All acronyms are abbreviations; but not all abbreviations are acronyms. An

|
Correct. It's an abbreviation that's pronounced as a word (like NATO,
radar, or laser). An abbreviation that is recited as series of letters
rather than as a word (like TYVM) is an abbreviation that is not an
acronym.

SP-3 for Windows XP is NOT released and it is not expected until early
next year.
What is available is the Beta of SP-3.
Beta is an incomplete product still undergoing testing.
It is not suitable for most and should only be installed by those
understanding the risks of installing Beta products.
Never install Beta unless you are prepared for data loss and the need to
perform Clean Installation of windows to resolve any and all issues.
However remote, that is the nature of Beta.
This applies to Beta anything from any source, not just Microsoft.

lets have a fresh start with a clean install. I'm well-prepared for it.

As the copy you previously had on your machine was an OEM from Dell you
should contact Dell. OEM copies are supported by the PC Manufacturer not
Microsoft. When you purchased your machine you should also have been given
recovery disks, if you haven't then there should be a recovery partition on
your hard drive. The Dell manual should have given instructions on how you
could have made a recovery disk. Obviously, as you are asking this question
it appears you neither have recovery disks and/or you never created a
recovery disk from any hidden partition on the hard drive, so you will need
to contact Dell to see if they can provide you with the disks; they may
charge for this.
Once you are back up and running may I suggest that you purchase a third
party imaging application such as Acronis True Image and then image the hard
drive to a set of DVDs. This is by far the simplest and safest way of
protecting your operating system and data.

Chances are that most, if not all, of that stuff in msconfig has nothing
whatsoever to do with components left over from uninstalling software.
If you're interested in researching what these entries are to see which

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
and

You also need to take out the trash (clear temp files) and defrag the
hard drive if you haven't done so already. There are a few different
ways to clear away temp files from within Windows (Disk Cleanup, for
instance). I personally like Ccleaner, which has a very user-friendly
interface:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Just use the main feature of cleaning temp files. Don't use the Issues
feature (not necessary and it's possible it might mess things up!).
The most important thing is to make sure you're free of malware. *That*
is what more than often slows things down.
