Okay Steve got it right finally..lol!!
When I net view from the client computer to the host computer I get my
shared folders, and it says "The command completed successfully." When I new
view from my host computer to my client computer I get a message that says
Network Path Not Found. So I guess my Host is still not seeing the client
computer even though the folders are showing up in Windows Explorer/My
network Places. When I click on the shared folders in My Network Places(on
the host) I get essentially the same message...Network Path Not Found.

For net view on my host computer, I type in at the prompt: net

Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > cmd) first, Dean:
1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Run.
3. In the Run window, type "cmd" in the box.
4. Click OK.
Then type the commands in the command prompt window. To close the
window, type the command "exit".
If there's no Run command in the Start menu, press the Windows key and
"R" key at the same time to open the Run window.
Or, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
SUCCESS!! Steve....worked perfectly..I appreciate your time and patience
Steve..I learned some new things from you... I got all four packets back on
both computers.
Dean
That's good. What's the result of typing the two "net view" commands
on each computer?
Steve,
I get the same results on both computers...it doesn't appear to be my shared

The syntax of this command is:
Net [ accounts computer config continue file group help

share start statistics stop time use user view ]
Dean
The form of the command is:
net view \\computer

Thanks for all the help with this. It was network resources at our end (not
the remote end) that we cannot access after connecting to the VPN. I have
actually found a possible solution but am not sure if it is correct. The
PC's here that are connecting to the PVN have internal IP addresses from the
10 range and a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 (this is given to them by DHCP). I
have found that if I change it to a static address and change the subnet mask
to 255.255.0.0 then everything works, I can connect to resources at the
remote end and our end. Does this make sense?
Thanks

Apologies if this query is in the wrong section. I have a couple of XP
Pro
machines here that connect to a client server via a VPN connection just
using
the MS VPN client. Unfortunately when they connect they can no longer use
any of the local network resources such as mapped drives or e-mail. I can
get it to work by ticking the 'use default gateway on remote network'
option,
but I am thinking that is not the best way to get round the problem. Hope
someone has an idea.
Thanks
D
Using the built-in PPTP VPN client on an XP box that is the only way to do
what you want, ie. unchecking the 'use default gateway on remote network'
checkbox. Note the potential security risks...

Do you mean the "local network resources" at the "remote" VPN end
point of the client or at "your" end of the VPN.
If your are trying to access the "local network resources" at the VPN
"end" point, that is the required setting.
As for the "Local" resources at "your" end, you need to check in
greater details for the recommended setting by Sonner is the so called
"recommended solution."

What traffic do you have, that you had to open the router for? Remember again,
that's only for traffic from the Internet to your LAN. There are no ports to
open, on a typical NAT router, that affect Windows Networking.
I cannot access the shared resources. The file and printer shares I guess are
setup from the wizard I had tried to use. I do not know how to modify things.
I'm used to the old tab where you can assign users and rights. How do I get
back to this please?
First, please resolve the NetBT issue. Are you logged in as an admin (hopefully
not), or as a full user which has the right to optionally run as admin. You
must run the Network Wizard as an administrator. UAC should prevent you from
getting the old tab etc without running as admin. If you were able to disable
Windows Firewall, you can Enable NetBT. Unless you Enable NetBT, you should
expect this problem.
Yes, I am logged in as the Administrator (to be able to assign user rights)
and NetBIOS over TCP/IP is still enabled.
Can I not assign rights the old way (with the tab)? I do not want to use the
wizard. Is that my only option? If so, it keeps turning on the Windows
firewall which I do not want to use. If I try to turn it off... some issue
with sharing comes up in a warning like message box.
What does UAC stand for please?
UAC = User Access Control. UAC prevents you from running processes as an
administrator, unless intentionally. But that's in Vista. Your complaining
about missing "the old tab where you can assign users and rights" made me think
Vista, where people are constantly complaining.
So now, I'm confused. We have one post
"I can see both PCs on one PC. On the other PC... YES!! both are visible on both
PCs."
then a second post
"I cannot access the shared resources. The file and printer shares I guess are
setup from the wizard I had tried to use."
Is NetBT enabled now, and is everything working, or is there still a problem?
I still have the most recent problems. The PCs can see each other, but I
cannot access shared resources. Yes, both PCs have NetBIOS enabled.
I think the confusion is because I have made changes and the problem has
changed, and I have posted what I have done and how the network was affected
as a result.
OK, if the computers can see each other, that's an improvement. Now we have
another problem to fix. You just have to go one at a time.

We need updated diagnostics. Logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net

place to start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp
I have fixed the security tab missing problem. Simple filing sharing was
turned on in error.
Ouch. Such a simple detail, yet so easily overlooked. Thanks for the update.
Is everything working now, or is there yet a detail to diagnose?
Well, since you asked I do have one more small detail I'm struggling with.
Here's the scoop -
Same network and PCs
Computer A can access computer B's shared resources without being prompted
with a Windows login box. Computer B to access computer A's shared resources
is prompted with a Windows login screen. I remember setting it up this way
back when, but I cannot remember how I did it. I would like to remove it now.
And for B to access A, I must have set it up so that there is only one
specific Windows user on A that has permission. I've check the sharing
permissions on the share tab as well as the security tab. I do not see my
problem there e.g. that the only user on A has permission.
Any idea what I did so that I can undo the Windows login requirement?
Thank you very much Chuck!
-Charlotte
My pleasure, Charlotte. I'ts good to see progress.
So you're using Advanced File Sharing (SFS turned off). Is the single user
activated for network access, on both computers?

John,
Do you understand what the static route table does? Quite simply, it matches
destination IP address to a logical or physical interface. It's used by every
device that uses Internet Protocol for communication.
If you have 2 interfaces (network adapters) connected to the same physical
network (as in one Ethernet and one WiFi adapter connecting to the same access
point / switch), IP uses the cost figure to decide which available interface to
use, at any time. If you have 2 interfaces connected to different networks, IP
uses the routing entries to determine how to access any network.
Read the article by Joe Davies of Microsoft, linked from my article.

not), or as a full user which has the right to optionally run as admin. You
must run the Network Wizard as an administrator.

Logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net
config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, are a good
place to start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Is the single user
activated for network access, on both computers?
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate
Yes, SFS is off. The Guest account on both PCs is off/disabled.
|
And do you have the same non-Guest account, with identical password, activated
for network access on both computers? Did you select "Reconnect at logon" for
each share?

I happen to have the same User account and password set up on both PCs. This
same account is NOT the account the one PC is demanding for access though.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on both PCs (I had enabled it on both)
The Windows firewall is off on boths PCs (using router firewall)
I only have an anti-virus program now
TCP/UDP port 445 open on router (had to open for incoming traffic). One of
your links stated both TCP & UDP. The other said just TCP. Which is correct

Both PCs can now view the workgroup without the error I had before, but
neither computer can see itself or the other PC
OK, now that you know, Enable NetBT. For a small LAN, it's essential.
What router (make and model please) do you have? If it's a NAT router, there is
no firewall. And NAT only protects the computers on the LAN from what's on the
Internet, NOT from each other.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html
What traffic do you have, that you had to open the router for? Remember again,
that's only for traffic from the Internet to your LAN. There are no ports to
open, on a typical NAT router, that affect Windows Networking.
I cannot access the shared resources. The file and printer shares I guess are

OK, we're getting somewhere. Just because you can log in locally doesn't mean
that the account is active for network access.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate
Once you get the right account properly activated for network access (on each
computer as a server), log in locally (to each computer as a client). Delete
and re add the network connection, specify the desired account / password, and
select "Reconnect at logon".
