My ISP is Yahoo/ATT, and they recently changed to Symantec for virus
scanning. Ever since they did this, I have a few problems with my machine.

1) When I boot, wuauclt says it can't find memory to execute and bends.

2) I get wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I can select end, debug, or anything else, and I will continue to get those
error messages ad nauseum. The only way Ive found around it is to keep those
error windows open and move them to the side of my screen.

At the same time, I can't get WMI updates from symantec - just says it won't
download, and now I can't get Windows updates either - when I go to the site
to download, I end up with IE 7 giving a not found on the page. In fact,
microsoft.com can't even give me a list of what patches I've downloaded
(although it tells me I have it set to automatically load critical patches on
my machine, even though my security center tells me that I've stopped that
service). I stopped the security center service when I installed anti-virus
from my ISP to avoid conflicts.

I am running an HP pavilion a710n on XP home, version 2002, service pack 2.
I keep going back Symantec and microsoft trying to get those patches
installed, but to no avail - also I would really appreciate trying to get the
ausuclt errors to go away.

I did try some advice to remove some dll's from the windows 32 directory,
but some of the files it told me to remove I didn't even have, so haven't
been successful there.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

1. Uninstall your ISP-supplied Norton application via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2007080716174339?Open&docid=2005033108162039&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid

4. Download/install another anti-virus application of your choosing (but
nothing by Norton or McAfee). If cost is a factor, here are two free ones:

Avira AntiVir
http://www.free-av.com/

Avast4
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I no longer recommend AVG Anti-Virus, Free or Pro.

Your anti-virus application should be configured to seek and install updates
automatically, daily, at a time when the machine is usually running and
connected to the internet. It should also be configured to run a full
system scan a few minutes after seeking/installing updates, also daily.
Anything less is simply insufficient these days.
