I have created a word document (let's call it test.doc). I create a link
from test.doc to another word document called document2.doc, using Insert
Hyperlink, and I set the Address only as document2.doc. There are no paths
showing. Document2.doc and test.doc reside in the same folder.
I then do a SAVE AS WEB PAGE for the test.doc, and I name it index.html.
All links work fine when I test the index.html and its link document2.doc in
the folder where they were created.
I them move the whole folder to my desktop (I am trying to see if my
index.html is independent of the folder it was created so I can later upload
the folder to the internet and have the document2.doc link from index.html.
The link in index.html called document2.doc does not link.
What am I doing wrong? i am try to make the index.html and the the other
files in the folder independent of any computer that runs it, or where I
upload it on the web.
What am I doing wrong?

Your problem is three-fold:
1) there's a glitch in word that will not keep hyperlinks intact.
2) duplicate your website directory strucure on your local computer.
3) create and place both the html pages and any supporing images in their
prospective and previoisly duplicated directories.
4) use relative paths in your hyperlinks.
As an aside; Word is not the best software for creating web pages. |

Don,
Thanks for your quick response.
Hmm, I thought I was using a relative path since the Address from Insert
Hyperlink was only showing document2.doc
Yet, when I tried to do the actual link it had a Cannot find 'file:// etc
added to the path.
Is there a setting in Tools/Options that I need to set to force the
hyperlink to be relative?

While I agree with Don that Word is hopeless as a web creation tool, ensure
that tools > options > general > web options > files > update links on save
is unchecked.
