Briefly, had to re-load XP after something froze it up. Wound up with a dual
boot either XP Home (frozen, was fully upgraded) or XP Pro. During update of
XP Pro, tried both online and downloaded version of SP2. Takes several
minutes (forever, same as first time back on XP home) then displays error msg
"can't copy RRCM.DLL" and ultimately quits installation and rolls back. Have
tried downloading SP2 and also re-directing the install to other copies of
RRCM.DLL within the system.

Can operate without SP2 but other upgrades (media center 9) require it.

Some app is running that has the file 'in use', probably antivirus or
antispyware.
