I had a Iomega Zip External Drive on my system. I removed it as I did
not need it anymore (got an external WD Harddrive instead). But,
after removing the USB Zip Drive, it still shows up in My Computer and
also in "Safely Remove Hardware". I can go into Safely Remove
Hardware and delete the item, and it is removed from Safely Remove
Hardware and My Computer, until I reboot the system and then it's
back.
I checked in Device Manager and do not see a reference to this device
in there. I'm running Windows XP with all the latest updates.
Any thoughts from anyone on how I can get references to this drive
completely removed on a permanent basis?

Now I see what you're talking about, you disconnected the Zip,
but it's still showing as a drive letter in Explorer and in the notification

I reattached the Zip Drive and it was detected, but came up with a |
different drive letter then before (Old was "G", reattached was "H").
I used Safely Remove to remove both G & H, both were removed, rebooted
and "G" was back, but not "H".
What's next? If anything!

Put the following into a batch file:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc
then run the batch file. When the Device Manager opens select View>Show Hidden Devices.
In the Disk Drives entry you should see a greyed out listing for the Zip, right click and select
uninstall and it will remove this item's information from the registry.

For now, you can just open a DOS shell (Command Prompt) and enter the
commands manually.
Also, if you want to permanently allow yourself to see what has been
previously recorded (enumerated) for devices that are now disconnected
(so, by default, are not shown), you could add the environment
variable permanently to your Windows shells by:
- Right-click on My Computer on the desktop and select Properties. Or
use the System applet in Control Panel.
- Advanced tab.
- Environment Variables button.
- Create a new environment variable. If you make it a system
variable, it is available to all users (accounts) on that host. If
you make it a user variable, it is defined only when you login under
your account.
- Add a new environment variable called
"devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" (sans quotes).
- Give it a value of 1.
- Ok your way out. Now the variable is defined for any program that
starts afterward.
If you want to use a batch file, create a .bat file using Notepad and
enter the commands that David mentioned. Then run the .bat file (by
double-clicking on it, for example, or call it in a DOS shell). |
