I'm sure I saw a reference somewhere to setting Win XP to boot the PC
automatically at a pre-set time of day. Blowed if I can find it now, and
'Help' doesn't seem to work, nor does the Power Options icon in Control
Panel. Am I dreaming this? |

Presuming that by "boot" you mean "start up" (and not reboot), this is
something you'd set in your computer's BIOS, not in the operating system.
If you mean reboot, you can use shutdown.exe in a batch file you schedule in
Task Scheduler. |

Thanks, Lanwench. Yes, by 'switching on' I did mean 'start up', so I now
realise this isn't a Windows issue at all. Tinkering in the BIOS will have
to wait until I'm feeling stronger.

Scheduled Tasks has the ability to wake up the computer if it's in
standby or hibernation. |

Hibernation uses the same amount of power as a normal shutdown.
Standby uses a few watts more (in any case fewer than 10 watts total)
when the ACPI standby state in the bios is set to S3 (all the fans off
in standby).
