You will need to backup your data first.
then simply set the bios to boot first from cd
boot from your XP cd and delete your partition...
recreate as NTFS
then install XP |

Before "downgrading" to XP, be sure that the motherboard/PC supports XP.
Go to the motherboard/PC-maker support website and find and download XP
compatible drivers for all on-board hardware. If SATA/SCSI/RAID hard drive
controller on the motherboard, be sure to put the drivers on a floppy.
Other drivers can go on a CD.
If no XP drivers are offerred, only Vista drivers, then contact the
motherboard/PC-maker supports Vista. They may not. In which case, once you
delete Vista, you will not be able to install and use XP.

You could try running the programs in Compatibility Mode. Might be worth a
try.

What Philo said would be the basics of switching back... However you
might run into some driver problems depending on your system... If you
have an OEM license on for example a Dell or HP computer the drivers are
embedded in the operating systems... Everything is solveable, It just
might turn into more work than expected so keep that in mind aswell |

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications (Those
that are WinXP-compatible, that is) re-installed.

There is only one way to do it--a clean installation of XP. That
requires that you back up all your data, then restore it after XP
installation. It also requires that you reinstall all your
applications from their original media after XP installation.
What programs are you having a problem with?

- Backup all your data and product keys.
- Check that there are drivers for each of your hardware components for
Windows XP.
- Check that the software you have will run on Windows XP.
- Boot with your licensed copy (unused license) of Wndows XP.
- Delete all partition(s) that you need to (if you have a recovery
partition - you may want to leave it alone.)
- Create new partition(s).
- Install Windows XP.
- Update with the latest hardware drivers.
- Patch with the latest Windows XP Security patches.
- Install all other software.
