In Word 2003, XP, a document seems OK over-all, but when it's emailed and
opened from the email (Outlook), the TOC gets in trouble. When the document
is first opened from email, it's in Reading View, and the TOC is correct. But
when the document is changed to Print View, all the page numbers from 3 on
are reset to 3, which is the page with the TOC. When the doc is put back in
Reading View, the page numbers stay wrong-- they do not go back to the
correct numbers.

The only TOC field option in use is \u, and no styles are specified. That is,
only standard headings are part of it. This problem doesn't happen when the
doc is opened normally. Any advice appreciated.

This is a known bug when a document is opened in Reading Layout view. You
have three options:

1. Suggest that recipients save the document to the hard drive before
opening; documents opened from the hard drive don't open in Reading Layout
view.

2. If recipients insist on opening the document directly from the
attachment, suggest that they disable Reading Layout view (Tools | Options |
General). They may thank you for the information on how to do this.

3. If recipients insist on opening the document directly from the attachment
and prefer not to disable Reading Layout view, suggest that, after switching
to some other view, they update the TOC (F9), which will correct the
numbering.

Notice that in all three cases, all you can do is "suggest." There is
*nothing* you can do on your end to solve the problem; your recipients must
take action to solve or avoid it.
