With Word 2007
When doing a mail merge from an Excel datasource I need to keep the number
formatting ($ or %), is there a way to do that?
I have tried formating the field in word under the "edit field menu" but i
haven't been sucessfull. Is this where I should be formatting my numbers? Can
anyone guide me?

The formatting in Excel is not carried by the default merge to Word. It is
necessary to format the field using a switch.
See http://www.gmayor.com/formatting_word_fields.htm
In this instance pres ALT+F9 to display the field construction eg
{Mergefield fieldname}
and in between the brackets add the switch i.e for cash amounts
{Mergefield Fieldname \# "$,0.00"}
Percentages are a little more complicated - but are covered in the linked
page.
