Ok have been using vista for a while and decided that im not loving the
incompatability with some progs atm so decided to install xp home on a
seprate hdd keeping my vista installation in tact so I can use the
files on there and wait untill it gets better. Xp home is on a ide and
vista is on sata. But xp is running fine but I cant seem to access any
of my vista files, xp is picking it up in system devices but I cant get
in to it in any way. Also disk managment is telling me that the sata is
800gb when it is in fact 500gb.

Any help with this would be great as I dont really want to format the
sata and lose all my files. Thanx in advance.
Bobby

most likely your not able to access the files as your not the USER UID that
was created using Vista, your now using XP which is now using a different
UID, so take ownership of the files.

Sounds like you didn't install XP in a dual boot configuration and damaged
the Vista boot loader in the process. If you did have it set up as a dual
boot configuration to begin with then changing the boot drive is an
unneccessary step. Changing the default boot order in Vista's boot manager
would be all that was needed to default to XP.

You might be able to repair the Vista files/boot configuration without going
to extreme measures... someone else may have instructions for that. This
person had the same/similar scenario:
http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=553

There might also be some useful information here:
http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

If not, a repair install of Vista, assuming you have Vista OS discs,
shouldn't erase your user files. If your computer came with OEM recovery
discs its recovery process would need to have a non-destructive mode to
achieve the same thing, otherwise your files would be lost. HP usually has
that, I don't know about the other OEMs.

Hi thanx for that it was looking promising using the first guide.

Booted the vista dvd, once it loaded entered repair.

diskpart
select disk 0
list volume
All that was fine.....

but then when looking at the partitions/volumes, volume 0 which is the
sata instead of it being ntfs it says raw by the side, whiles my new xp
it says ntfs..... which is the filesystem on the sata(or should be). So
the other options explained in the guide wouldn't work kept getting an
error.

while looking through the commands for diskpart i remember seeing I
think it was convert, is that the next option or would that screw up
the filesystem completely if it isnt already? Or is there another
option?

Thanx in advance

You don't want to convert until windows is up and operating

Ok bit of a development, I have found someone having the same problem on
another forum with his usb device and was ionstructed to try PC
inspector file recovery from download.com. So I thought I would give it
a go and see what happens. So i have tried it and can see all my files
from my sata/vista partition which is good so I know now that they
havent been wiped. But still the question is how can I repair it?

Any thoughts?

Thanx

a Previous response said the Allocation tabe was corrupted by the install of
the operating system, xp after VIsta? or Vista after XP, I would suggest you
attempt to repair that allocation table, how to go about it, I haven't a clue.
