Marc,

You're mowst welcome. Whatever is causing this issue still remains to be
figured out. What's apparently occurring is that the update server is
checking the validity of the wuredir and wsus3setup.cabs and the
communication between the system and the server ceases. Thus, the update
server attempts to download the .cabs and that fails, too, due to the
communication breakdown [ thank you, Led Zeppelin <w>]
For now, we'll blame Led Zep ...

Could you check in the
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
subfolder and tell me:

1) How many folders are in there
2) Open the folders contained therein, then right click the wuredir.xml
files and post back the the Created and Modified dates of them
3) Which ISP you use

Thanks

Thanks for the info on the ISP, Marc. Got a different answer from
someone else seeing this issue, so it's not the ISP that's the culprit.

Inside the two folders in WuRedir ... one should be named
7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D, and contain 2 .cab files.

The other ,9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77, contains one
..cab file. Is that what you're seeing ?

I've tried the following:

- I tried the guided help - no luck
- Internet connectivity is fine
- Firewall has been eliminated as a problem
- I had used a software accelerator (ashampoo); however I removed it and
then reset the Internet connection settings using DRTCP
- Windows Update and Microsoft Update have been added to the Trusted Sites
list
- I removed the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running properly
- Event Log is running properly

Mow, you're exactly right. In the WuRedir folder are those 2 files and the
1st one has the
2 .cab files and the latter has the one. Still getting the same error in
windows update.

Thanks for the info on the ISP, Marc. Got a different answer from

Inside the two folders in WuRedir ... one should be named
7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D, and contain 2 .cab files.

The other ,9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77, contains one
..cab file. Is that what you're seeing ?

Could you check in the
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
subfolder and tell me:

1) How many folders are in there
2) Open the folders contained therein, then right click the wuredir.xml
files and post back the the Created and Modified dates of them
3) Which ISP you use

OK, Here goes.
1) 2 folders
2) the create and modified dates for each are the exact same,
March 21, 2007 12:48:26

3) I have Comcast cable modem, which I've had for nearly 10 years, first in
Philly, now in south Florida.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Fixwareout.exe is ONLY meant for systems that are infected with that

bad when someone posts that Users should run malware specific tools with
no evidence that the Users systems are not infected.

XP SP2 is installed, correct ?
Could you please do a manual visit to Windows Update once more ?
When the error appears, close IE.
Then go to Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the following into the

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
Copy and paste the last 30 or so lines of the log into your reply, please.

The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an

You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt).

After that try the microsoft update - it worked great for me.

It's a 'cross platform' firewall issue, too, Robert. So far, 2 culprits
have been Trend and ZoneAlarm.
BUT, there have been others whose systems get the 0x80072EE7 error
using the native XP firewall.
Commodo is another culprit except that it usually allows communication
to the Update sites but prevents the installation of the updates.

And the beat goes on ...
<sarcasm> I'm so glad I have little contact with the Update Team ... it
makes troubleshooting these issues so much fun </sarcasm>

Oops. I didn't realize that was a firewall too. I guess its name implies that
though. Then, my standard question would be: does it have any diagnostics
in it which would let them trace the packet flows? If not, use netcap but unless
the firewall is completely transparent for WU traffic that may not show you what
IE is seeing. Inserting Fiddler2 between IE and the firewall would at least
let them see the HTTP traffic and some HTTPS.
