When I open Word 2007 using Vista, I can type on the page, but the scroll
bars are frozen, and no other functionality is available. I cannot move the
cursor on the page, change font etc.

On closing, the message is "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working"
followed by "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then the
program restarts in an endless cycle of crashing and restarting.

I have removed and reinstalled the program to no avail. PowerPoint and
Outlook work fine.

Any ideas?

Incompatible legacy third party add-in. Start Word in Safe Mode: from Start,
Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word start and close OK now? If yes, check the
contents of the Word Start-up folder. Rename any *.dot files found to *.bad
and then try starting Word normally. If it is OK now, rename the *.dot files
back to *.dot until you find the one causing the problems.

So far so good. It opened in Safe Mode. Where is the Word Start-up folder?

I tried to run set up for macromedia but no options for addins. I uninstalled
macromedia completely and uninstalled and reinstalled office 2007 but
incredibly it still loads the same default template with the same error on
closing. any other suggestions please would be very welcome

You'll have to uninstall it by running Macromedia setup and selecting the
Office plug-ins. The setup will remove the add-ins. But check with
Macromedia support first as they may have an update to make it compatible
with Office 2007.

Uninstalling/Reinstalling Office rarely achieves anything as all the
registry settings, templates, add-ins and not removed or overwritten.

I suggest that as this is a macromedia problem, you contact their support to
see how it can be removed or if they have an update that is compatible.

This worked, excellent idea! The location of the startup file is:

C:\Users\ <Your Windows login Name> \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word
\STARTUP

Just clean out all of the doc files in there. I started getting this
problem when I accidently pushed the power off button on my laptop
when running Word. It tried to alter my Normal.doc file, and then my
problems dominoed from there...
