I got too zealous about security and didn't know exactly what I was doing -
although I'm intermediate/advanced in my computer experience, I'df just never
dealt with this sort of thing before - and while I was messing around with
permissions after a nasty trojan attack, I accidentally deleted the Windows
Installer Service. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Windows Installer 3.1
according to exact directions in the Microsoft support docs on this site, but
the service is still kaput, giving me an error every time I try to install
anything. I am afraid I will have to install XP again, which would be a
pain...can anyone think of a way around that? I've looked up and down the web
and cannot find any info that would help me. |

You can allways 'repair' a win installation, provided you have the cd that
is not merely a recovery cd

There are a LOT of 'Installer Issues' -type posts & tweaks in these
newsgroups.
One prime example: From kellys-korner-xp.com [from A-Z sect., under
'W']:
"Go to Start/Run and type in:
msiexec /unregister [click ok]
Then Start/Run and type in:
msiexec /regserver [click ok]
If neither of the above has helped: Go to Start/Run/
Regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
\MSIServer
Does the image path in the right pane correctly point to:
(modify drive letter as needed)
C:\Windows\System32\Msiexec.exe /V
If not: boot into safe mode and then go to Start/Run/CMD
and type in: msiexec.exe
Once done and while still there type in: msiexec /regserver
Check the image path again, if it is now present, reboot."
If the above yields no joy, another suggestion:: Win-key + R > cmd
Good luck [:-D
