I've just bought this for my twin 14 yo boys [still in gift wrapping]. For
Xbox live, can I get them each their own account using the same console? I
realize they'd not be able to be logged on at the same time. Though it would
be cool if they could using split screen.

I believe you can put multiple Xbox Live accounts, or profiles, on a single
Xbox 360. I've seen store demo units with multiple Xbox Live (XBL) profiles
on them (likely stored on the hard drive, since these were Premium models)
-- ISTR one such unit with 14 XBL profiles stored on it!

Which model did you get your boys, if I may ask? :)

You can have more than one profile on your Xbox, I have two, one for myself
and one for my wife.

You can have quite a few accounts on the system. You get free Silver
accounts which you can do everything except online game. If you want to
online game you need a paid GOLD account. It only works per 1 account. I
believe each of your kids would need their own Gold account to play Online.
Sure they could for example share 1 account for online gaming, but that
causes problems with Gamer points and achievements.
For each to have their own points and achievements in games they have to be
playing on their own accounts. Some online games will allow guest players,
so you could have 1 paid gold account and the other person play as a guest,
but anything done while playing the game he wouldn't get credit for being a
guest. You can buy Gold cards in the store for $50 which is a 12+1 or 13
month service card at which time you renew or the account reverts back to
silver, but you can sometimes find them cheaper. Amazon is currently
selling a card for $44.99, but I've heard of it being even cheaper once in a
while from places. Some people luck out and find deals.

If they both have their own LIVE GOLD account, some games will allow split
screen and both with there own accounts play online at the same time with
others. Again it all depends on the game. I know off hand MotoGP will
allow guest users playing online for example.
