Ok I have read most every post on here for people whose cd roms suddenly
stopped working or are no longer recognized by there computer. .

First if you deleted the upper and lower filters like microsoft tells you
to, put them back this only makes the problem worse.
I have noticed that they also don't tell you to make a backup of your
registry before you delete them but a system restore should bring them back.
Once that is done or if you don't have to do that then

Second go to control panel, programs and features. On the left side of the
window click on view installed updates.
Under microsoft windows there should be a list of 49 or so updates
(depending on when you read this).
start uninstalling your "Update for microsoft windows" listings one by one
restarting and testing the drive after each one until you find the one that
solves the problem. you may want to shut off the automatic updates or you
will just have to do this over again later. Rebooting to vista from scratch
works because you are starting fresh without the updates.
I believe that it is the compatibility update that started this problem to
begin with (KB932246 being most recent and KB929427 being the earliest.)
write down each one before uninstalling it so you know what works and what
doesn't .
as far as how to stop it from happening again you would have to run your
windows update manually to make sure not to install the update again. If you
do have this problem just go back and delete the update again. Good luck Hope
this works for you like it did for me.

Hello All:
I can attest that tigeress357 suggestion for fixing the CD/DVD problem
works! I'm listening to music as I type. The instructions were clear and
comprehensive. I was lucking enough that my first Windows Update that was
uninstalled was the problem. Thanks again!
