I know I've seen it somewhere, but I can't find (in Word 2007 on Vista), how
to turn off the control that makes th, st and rd in subscript when typing
dates. I want them to appear and print as normal text. Can someone point
me in the right direction please.

You need to look for the Ordinals setting.
In 2003 this is found under AutoCorrect, AtoFormat As You Type.
Hope this points you in the right direction.
