Is there any way to get around this and any idea why it is happening
with just one file? The file is still playable (a .wmv file) when I
play it from my External drive. I just can't copy it (I can't even
copy it to the External drive).
Thanks in advance!!

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I ran chkdsk and it said there were
no errors. I did not run scandisk however. |

I have an external hard drive (Maxtor 80G) with about 1/2 of
it filled up. I am able to add to it and move files from it onto my
machine with no problems. However there is ONE file...just the one,
that gives me the "Cannot copy....I/O Device Error" message.
Can you rename it? Any weird characters in the name? Is the
name unusually long or is the destination path?
Open a cmd prompt and try this syntax
copy "\\?\x:\the source path\filename.wmv" "\\?\y:\dest path\"
What happens with that?

Hey Bill,
Yes, I can rename it and there are no weird errors in the file name or
destination path. |

Tried searching sys32/drivers, wizard reports driver not found. I did install
the Nero software, that didn't help either. There is no firmware update for
this drive. Any other suggestions?
"Brian A." wrote:

Open Device Manager.
Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on the DVD drive and click Update Driver in the popup menu.
Select "No, not this time" > Next > Install from a list or specific location > Next
click the box "Search removable media (floppy, cd-rom) to deselect it.
Click the Browse button and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
Click OK > Next.
If no joy, have you installed the Nero software that is provided with it? If not
do so.
If still no joy try updating the firmware for the drive:
http://www.memorex.com/html/products_detail.php?section=3&CID=11&SID=15&PID=872&FID=115&opento=11
To get the firmware click on the Support tab on the page under and to the right of
the drives graphic and description.

Is the drive formatted with NTFS or FAT32?
I have had small glitches iwth FAT32 support over the years...
That being said...
try renaming the file and the file extension and then naming it back
if it works.
Another trick I've used is running MS backup on just that file and
seeing if I can subsequently restore it to an alternate destination.
If all else fails, make a back up of the drive and then run the
manufacturers drive diagnostics on it (available from their website).
Even "weirdness" on a single file is often indicative of it no longer
being a trust worthy storage source... I'm a little paranoid about
that type of thing...
best wishes

You paying by the post, or something? Who cares how many posts are in this
thread? Once the number hits 200, then we're talking unnecessary. <jk>
A group like this one is visited by a lot of first-timers, by definition
people who need help with their computers. There are a lot of smart people
answering questions here, the message volume is healthy but not out of
control, and the mood is generally genial. It's a good place to stick around
and learn from others while sharing specialized knowledge.
I've been involved in MS newsgroups for almost ten years, and IME allowing a
goof like "No C" to go unchallenged prevents lurkers from making that first
post, makes OPs feel unwelcome for no good reason, changes the mood of the
group, and unnecessarily reduces the number of questions asked and problems
solved. If that's what you're after...then ignore it. As a result of this
thread it's obvious to me that there's no point in asking it to back up its
claims, so that will end here. A simple comment to the OP will suffice. No
flame wars, no endless discussions, no distractions.
It's spring break here...I wonder if that explains the inactivity by "No C."

No, another model, but also from Nvidia.
The problem is related with Windows, Video drivers, and monitor.
There's no hardware problem or conflict.
The system runs fine with Linux-Knoppix, no video problem at all.

Install the required (and updated) motherboard chipset drivers.
Then,
locate an updated video card drive (from here: www.nvidia.com)

Yes, it's correctly set to AGP card. The other option is PCI card.
The motherboard BIOS is updated with the latest version also.

The temporary solution takes a few steps:
- to disable de display adapter.
- enable the display adapter, and after that the monitor icon magically
shows up.
- click on Control Panel/Display/Settings and it shows 640x480. Adjust it
to
1280x1024.
- click on Advanced tab and change the Refresh Rate from 60Hz to 72Hz.
The system works fine until next boot.
I've tried to uninstall the video drivers, install it again, even in safe
mode.
I've tried to uninstall de monitor drivers.
Exchange the video card with other from another computer.
Clean the registry with a video cleaner drivers, and make a new clean

Use the software Registry Mechanic to fix any possible flaw in the

Run sfc /scannow to replace any possible corrupted system dll file.
No success at all, I lost my video configuration every boot, and have the

I have to clue how to fix the problem.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.
