Almost certainly it is due to an incompatible add-in. test in Safe Mode to
confirm this. From Start, Run (Winkey+R) and type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word let you edit and close correctly now? If it does,
remove third party add-ins and replace them one at a time until you find the
problem one.

It works in safe mode. But I don't have any third party add-ins.

I have the same problem as Patel. However, unlike him, I do have a single
third party com Add In for the Snag It program. However, Word will not let
me remove this, telling me the "The connected state of Office Add-Ins
registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed.

Because of this I cannot remove the add in to determine if it is indeed
causing the problem. Please Help.

Brant

Two other things that can cause such problems are a corrupted normal.dotm or
a corrupted registry entry. I would try renaming normal.dotm (you might have
multiple copies) and the Data key in the registry to see it either restores
Word to working correctly. The following article describes the Data key:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/DataKeySettings.htm

In Word 2007, it's here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Try uninstalling Snag it from the Control Panel and test again.

Hello:

This key does not exist on my machine:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

What I do have is

.... \Office\12.0\Document Inspectors
.... \Office\12.0\Installed Root

In addition, I went to the add in key for Snag it and changed the load value
from 0 to 3. This worked for a while (except of course that Snag It was no
longer an Add in for Word 2007). NOW, however, Word 2007 has started
crashing on exit even without Snag It being listed as an Add In in Word 2007.

Please advise. This is really beginning to be frustrating.

Best regards,

Brant

I cannot believe that Word has opened and that there isn't a Data Key entry

Hi Terry:

Whoops. I feel foolish. I was looking under current machine, not current
user. Doh! Yes the data key is there and renaming it does fix the crash on
exit problem. I have not tried to add Snag It back in yet.

Thanks!

The problem is an update Microsoft pushed through for Word on a Vista machine.

See the thread in Office called "Mouse function failure - 2007 ms word SP1"
for the registry file you need to delete to fix this problem.
