That's what I figured. I thought it might show up in the event viewer--but
it didn't.
The computer works OK, but it kind of bugs me to know that something is
going on and I can' t figure out what it is.

In Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, there is a button for "Device
connect" and one for "Device disconnect." (As, for example, if you plug
or unplug something into a USB port.)
My computer occasionally makes these sounds---always in pairs only
seconds apart---for no reason. (I have not plugged in or unplugged a
device.) This does not seem to cause any problem with the computer's
operation.
Does anybody have any idea what would cause this to happen?

Hi all,
need help, desperately, from a BootitNG Expert, please:
trying to resize 3 partitions on my harddrive, using BootitNG. No problems
with deleting (but deleted partitions still take up harddrive space in
WinXP!); creating, or declaring as free space. But when I try "slide" or
"resize", nothing happens, the partitions stay where they are, keep their
sizes as they are. The help file bootitng.pdf (256 KB) from the bootitNG ZIP
package is not explicit enough for me as a newbie.
Does anybody know a link to a kind of "bootitNG for dummies"?
Thank you,

Well, thank you all! I appreciate your participation and suggestions. I will
certainly remember your tips for the future.
Here's what finally happened (short version). I called Plextor, picked a
drive with their guidance. Signed on to newegg.com and found the drive and
price. Before placing the order, wanted to be sure I could get my money back
on the Memorex I'd already bought so I headed to Circuit City.
When I got to Circuit City and told my sales tech what I was about to do, he
said no problem on a refund, but also agreed to take one last shot at filling
the order. He opened a couple of drives so we could try them in the store
with one of my "bad" DVD's. Sony's DRX-830U external drive read the sample
DVD I had with me. I took it home and tried every data DVD in my library. It
read every one. Back in business!
Technology. Ain't it great?

I have found that its hard to track down, other than going through suspects
in the registry. For example, some HP software is set to check for periodic
updates, but there is no option for it in the software itself, just in the
windows registry. Next time you hear the sound you might check
Taskmanager... I know the feeling, it drives me nuts too when stuff is
going on without my permission.

1gb actually being recognised by XP and used. How can i solve this. |

There is no solution. 32-bit XP can use up to 4GB. However the 4GB address
space has to be shared with memory used for other devices. So Windows (not
just XP but all 32-bit versions, including 32-bit Vista) can't use that
entire 4GB for itself.
How much it can use is not simply 3GB, but depends on what devices are
installed. It's normally a little more than 3GB. So installing more than
about 3GB of RAM is usually a waste of money.
But why have you so added so much RAM? How much RAM you can make effective
use of depends on what apps you run, but exepet for those doing things like
video editing or photographic editing of large images, it's a rare person
who will see any difference in performnace by going about 512MB or 1GB.

You add the /3Gb switch to the boot.ini file.
A Google search on boot.ini will result in info on this and other switches.

Problem solved (for me, anyway)...
I simply disabled all the ATI startup items. Obviously one of them was causing the message to pop up, because I no longer get the error message, and my driver is still installed, I can still access the Control Center, etc.
To disable the ATI items...
- Start Menu, Run
- msconfig
- Startup tab
- uncheck the following:
1. Anything that contains NV in its name (nVidia)
2. CLIstart - I suspect this was the culprit
3. Anything else from the ATI path
Good luck!
