I've been trying to manually download updates from Microsoft Update
but failed. After my PC being scanned, usually I will have the Select
by Type option for High Priority, Software & Hardware updates.
Whenever I click on any of those link, it goes back to the default
page. I'm being directed back to
http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/ instead of the
updates page.

If you have BitComet installed, then that might be the problem. Disable the
BitComet add-on for Internet Explorer.

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
Scroll down towards the bottom for the most recent entries. See if you
can locate the section of the log which shows the updates downloaded
successfully and the failed installation of said updates. If you can
recall which *date* this occurred, then use that as your guideline.
Copy & paste that section of the log into your reply, please.

Perhaps this will interest MOWGREEN, thanks to him/her I feel I may get an
answer.

I have 72 updates downloaded that will not install. without any error
messages.
I looked thro the messages in the group and found a possible solution posted
by MowGreenon 28/6/07.

It was go to cmd and type %systemroot%\system32\rundll32.exe etc, etc.
The instrunctions resulted in a dialogue box appearing containing "error in
setupapi.
Missing entry InstallHinfsection Default install".

Having got this info I would love to know what to do with it!

I also went to M/s update site and looked my update history.. it showed a
failure and an error code 0x80080008.
I will appreciate any help to solve my little problem. My PC seems to be in
perfect order otherwise

Thank you for your suggestion.
I have followed the procedure you described. After all I have tried to
update Windows and it has failed with the error I got previously (8000FFFF).
In addition to all I have lost the update history. I viewed "ReportingEvents"
file with this error:

F0FB8B3E-5597-49A1-8BA9-BFD989056B66} 2007-07-01
18:13:40:659+0300 1 148 101 {61CA813A-7585-442E-A66B-B0D15CE6BDC0} 1 8000ffff SelfUpdate Failure Software
Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x8000ffff.

Now I am almost sure that an error occurs because of the Windows update
software which failed to be installed (see my previous post). Maybe is there
a way I can try to istall this software manually? What should I do to try to
install it? Or any other suggestions on this problem?
Thanks.

Give this a try:

On the Start/Run line enter "net stop wuauserv" (without the quotes). You
should see a CMD window flash open then close.

Delete the entire SoftwareDistribution folder (located in C:\Windows).

Open Control Panel, then Internet Options. On the General tab click
"Delete" and then delete your Temporary Internet Files. Give it time to
complete, then OK your way out.

Restart the computer. This will allow the necessary service(s) to get a
clean start without any hooks left pointing to now-missing content.

Now open Control Panel, then the Windows Update applet, and elect to scan
for updates. Hopefully the new v7 controls will download/install on your
Vista system without errors. Watch for any notices asking your permission
to install the update and give those a "yes" click (you may not see
anything; watch for the yellow ActiveX safety warning banner).

If the new controls install without error, you should be good to go for
further WU/MU activities.

HTH :)

Also I have now noticed in the update history that one of updates

It is one of the latest updates installed.
Maybe is it the root of the problem? This Windows update software
failed to be installed and it is why Vista cannot update.
Please, any ideas how can I make Vista Update work? Thank you very

I think it's a Vista issue rather than an Office issue...however Vista
Upgrade Advisor did list Office (with some other Ms apps!) as one of the apps
that may have issues when I checked prior to upgrading!

Hello Michael,

Are you running SpyBot or Zone Alarm? If you are, try shutting both
SpyBot
and Zone Alarm down, and temporarily turn on your Windows Firewall.

Now, go to Windows Update and see if the later version of Windows
Update
installs okay.

Please let us know the results.

seemed to download this and then restart Windows Update, however now
it
reports the error code of 80070643.

What is going on here and how do I get things working again ?

When you hover your mouse over the icons in your tray area near the time, do
you see one that says it's for Spybot S-D Resident? It will look like a
silhouette of a person in front of a white square with blue top. if you DO
NOT see such an icon, Tea Timer is not running and Spybot is not running all
the time like mine does. If that is the case I can't help. Search the
newsgroup for the error code in the upper right of the page you quoted in
your first post.

If you DO see such an icon, right click on it. Then left click on the menu
opton Run Spybot S & D. Choose Tools in the menu on on the left of the Spybot
window. Next click on the Resident option in the Tools window. Uncheck any
boxes with check marks in them. Exit Spybot. If the icon is still there,
right click on it then left click Exit Spybot S & D-Resident. Restart the
computer then try to update Windows again. This page describes how to disable
http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-enabledisable-spybot-teatimer.html You will
have to scroll down to find the disable instructions.

If Spybot doesn't seem to be the problem try to disable any firewall,
antivirus or other anti-spyware program that runs all the time.

Good luck.

Do you use Spybot S & D? If so, turn off Spybot and try again. If you use the
Tea Timer feature of Spybot, be sure to turn that off as well. You may have
to go into the Task Manager to "kill" Tea Timer. Once I turned off Spybot,
Microsoft Update works like a charm.

Hope this helps.

I've read through a few other threads on this discussion group and tried

deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarting and trying again)

it
comes up with the same problem.

When checking to see the latest updates that were installed to see if

Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.734, so I'm assuming that that is the

I
don't know why it would not be working.

I'm pretty sure this is an RTM version and not Beta, RC1 or RC2.

Hi Michael,

Download Ccleaner and Dial-aFix

CCleaner
Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.

Do the scans with all the check marks on. in safe mode.

The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep running
it back-to-back until it finds nothing.

One scenario is a registry key may only be a reference pointing to a
completely different location in the registry and when it's removed then that
reference link is also noticed as being invalid on a subsequent scan.

It's generally a good idea to keep running the Issues scan until nothing is
listed.

Dial-a- Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mode.

Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download Dial-a-fix

Reboot

Try yours update now

Let us know how it works ºut

Hello again.
I've tried what you said. For the first update it gave me an error: "can't

tried the second one and couldn't install it neither. Error:

Any more help, please...
