I was really conversant in Word 6 - XP. This has got to be a nightmare
for Microsoft. Right now I have my heading 2 style. The numbers should
read "2.2", but they don't. The paragraph outline level is level 2,
but they have an independent numbering scheme. I have a previous
version of this document, where the numbers are
1.
1.1
1.2
2
2.1

But, somehow they've changed to
1.
1.
2.
2.
3.

It's crazy-making. If you have any ideas outside of moving to
StarOffice, I'd love to hear them.

Make sure all of the styles are linked to levels in the same list. On the
Home tab of the ribbon, click the Multilevel List button, and then click
Define New Multilevel List. This will present (almost) the same dialog box
as the one available in Word 97-2003. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

Stefan,
Thanks so much. That was useful. I'll add to that with
(1) for me the multi-level list button was the third in the paragraph,
um, ribbon region.
(2) Choose the heading one, and add it to a multi-level list.
(3) Choose the heading two, and add it to the list that now appears
under "multi-level lists in this document."

You are welcome.

Note that you can add all the heading styles to the list at once (via the
dialog box), as in previous versions of Word.
