Hello
I have 2 problems I hope some of you can help me with.
When doing either a cold startup, or doing a restart,
the pc starts up,
shows the windows icon, and sits there for about 1 1/2
to 2 minutes, until
the login page appears. After it finally does, I can
start up without any
problems. Any reason why this delay keeps occuring?

Also, I am trying to reformat a DVD-RW, using 3
different programs to try.
None seem to work. Any idea as to why the reformating
won't work?? It starts
out and keeps opening the drive tray.

Also, after laughter at my stupidity stops ... I am
a "newbie" ... Is there
a difference in the + (plus sign) and in the - (minus
sign) on the CD's and
the DVD's?

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

Well, first I would scan for spyware that might be
running in the background, then if that did not help a
virus scan.

Are you sure that it is an RW??? If it is, it might just
be bad.

+ & - are two differt formats, + is the more widely used
format & - is the better quality. Sort of like VHS verus
Beta.

Your PC stalls at the Windows screen because it's waiting for some task to
finish, quite likely having to do with the setup of your hardware.

Start your computer in Safe Mode (without networking). Does it start faster?
If so, your problem likely has to do with an incompatible or damaged driver.
Find Event Viewer (Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event
Viewer) and post the error report from your most recent regular (i.e. not in
Safe Mode) startup. That might help us narrow down the source of the
problem.

If you don't understand anything I said in the above paragraph, bring your
computer to a pro.

Windows XP does not have the software to reformat a rewriteable CD or DVD.
That comes from third party software. You'll have to ask the company who
wrote the software for help in using their product to reformat a DVD.

There are technical differences between the 'plus' and 'dash' formats of
recordable CDs and DVDs, but the real difference between the formats has
more to do with industry rivalries. (Remember Beta vs. VHS?) One format is
not significantly better than the other. Here's what you need to know: A CD
or DVD recorded in the 'plus' format only plays back on a player that can
play 'plus' formatted discs. Same thing with the 'dash' format. So for
maximum compatibility, record and playback your discs on machines that can
handle both formats.

Do you know which program created that folder? If it has anything to do

1. Open Outlook Express

Sounds like the registry key for your Shell Folders and/or User
Shell Folders is FOBAR.

Instead of trying to "remove it", try moving the incorrectly
located folder(s) to the correct location(s). Note that the
Operating System will automatically update the registry key for
the Shell Folders and/or User Shell Folders so that it points to
the new (correct) location.

For more information about moving special folders such as My
Music see the following:

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows
Windows XP Release Candidate Tips 'n' Tricks
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_tips_rc1.asp

Begin Copy and Paste

Change the location of the My Music or My Pictures folders
Contributed by Larry Samuels

In Windows 2000, Microsoft added the ability to right-click
the My Documents folder and choose a new location for that
folder in the shell. With Windows XP, Microsoft has elevated
the My Music and My Pictures folders to the same "special
shell folder" status of My Documents, but they never added
a similar (and simple) method for changing those folder's
locations. However, it is actually pretty easy to change the
location of these folders, using the following method.

Open a My Computer window and navigate to the location
where you'd like My Music (or My Pictures) to reside.
Then, open the My Documents folder in a different window.
Drag the My Music (or My Pictures) folder to the other
window, and Windows XP will update all of the references
to that folder to the new location, including the Start menu.

End Copy and Paste

Note: You can quickly open your personal My Music folder by
clicking Start, clicking Run, typing the following command and
clicking OK:

Shell:My Music
