have a home network set up with a wireless Linksys G router. Network works
fine - Internet access fine. But have frequent ip changes like 3-6 in 2
hours, which interfers with ip to ip games.
ISP says its a router problem - Linksys says its a ISP problem.
1 XP desk top wired to router-1 Vista laptop WiFi & 1 XP desktop w/usb
adapter - all with static ip to router
Modem is older Alcatel Home
Anyone got a solution or a reason this is happening?
ISP support is terrible |

It's happening because your ISP is making it happen. There's probably no
solution to the problem other than to get a fixed IP address.

Thanks - thats what i figured - The DSL ISP does not offer static ip to
residental customers. Guess I go looking for another provider maybe cable -
pretty sure they don't change as offten.
What about those DNS programs out there that can make a static ip??

I use a free account from DynDNS. My router, a Buffalo WBR-G54 running the |
DD-WRT v23 SP2 VPN firmware, supports DynDNS and others like No-IP.com. Both
work equally well. If your router does not support those directly you can
download a small update program onto one of your PCs that will contact the
DynDNS or No-IP servers on a scheduled basis (configurable). That way the
servers know your current public IP address and map that to your fully
qualified domain name (FQDN). You call home using the FQDN.

Thanks - Dynamis DSN was one I came across in my search for answers. Will go
look at it closer.

These services don't make a static IP address from a dynamic IP address,
what they do is take your domain name and update the DNS records associated
with it whenever your dynamic IP address changes. The IP address will still
keep changing and probably interfering with your gaming as well, I'd
imagine.

I had a similar problem recently with a client, which was causing problems
for them to connect remotely to their office computer. They use a DSL
dynamic IP Internet connection, and that's basically where the problem lies.
I set up EasyDNS, which does help keep the connection seemingly "static",
but the IP address was still changing very frequently (so even this was only
semi-helpful). In combination with the dynamic DNS service, I modified the
way the router connects to the ISP -- it was set to disconnect the connection
after 10 mins. of being "idle". This is probably why our IP address is
changing so often. I changed it to 12 hours. That seems to have stablized
things.
Another solution is to go with a cable ISP. The different technology does
stay "always on", which means you shouldn't have IP changes so often.
