That will do it. Refresh your link, however you have to do it.
I think you should be able to find a less disruptive way to do that
than having to reboot but many people claim otherwise.
Otherwise, if you left an IE window open but only visited sites you had
already visited with it (not necessarily cached pages) you might be able
to continue using them even though your DNS was failing. This is essentially
why you "can get emails". Either you already have a connection with your
E-mail servers or another DNS lookup for them is not required.
BTW this is not a problem with IE. You may get better assistance
from a newsgroup which specializes in networking for your OS.

You haven't given us enough information to guess.
One possibility is that you have a proxy on the path which is causing
this blockage. Apparently some antivirus packages can act as a local proxy
without the user being aware of it. It is also a technique employed by some
spyware packages, in which case your symptom could just be a reflection of
that server being overloaded and unable to continue redirecting requests
transparently. Etc.
BTW this question really has more to do with your OS and its networking
component than with IE. Cross-posting to a Networking newsgroup for

If you still need help you're going to have to do a better job of describing
what you are doing and seeing. Remember, your words have to substitute
for what our eyes might notice.
Otherwise Jack's site has a wealth of information in it which you could use
for checking and correcting your networking status.
In your other subthread (which is not cross-posted) you say you have
"two other computers which use the same internet connection".
What exactly does that mean? How are they all connected and in particular
what differences do you see using the diagnostics that Jack's site describes?
Also, if this involves a separate device you should check to see if it provides
its own diagnostics. Otherwise you could use a packet tracer such as netcap
for the two cases, working machine and not working machine, and then compare
them. Having two traces to compare means that you can notice differences
without having to know exactly what either trace is telling you.
BTW did you try the tests that I suggested? What happened?
You aren't giving us any details, so my guess is still that you have
a broken proxy connection on HTTP connections. Such a scenario
can account for your observations about FTP and HTTPS working.
Another thing you could try is booting in safe mode with networking.
Make sure that you are using the XP firewall because this test might
cause other security software packages (such as a software firewall)
not to run.

Hi, i tried your suggestion but that didn't work. I used the website that you

I am still able to connect to this computer within the local network but not

I am using the linksys wireless N router. I have a desktop which is running
Win XP Pro and I have setup the computer allowing remote desktop
connection.
I setup this computer under the DMZ. I am able to connection to this
computer
from local/external network without any problem but recently.. I am not
able
to connect to this desktop anymore from external network. I am still able
to
connect only within the local network. I have double check the router
setting. Nothing changed and the dmz is still pointing to the desktop.
Does
anyone know why I am not able to connect to the computer from the external
network anymore? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you.
First take the PC out of the DMZ. Having the PC in the DMZ is a big security
risk. Next forward TCP Port 3389 to the PCs static LAN IP address. You can
test if you have port forwarding setup correctly in the router by going to
the http://www.canyouseeme.org site.

Ok. I guess the DNS is established by DHCP? But won't the addresses
returned be different for the different connections?
Try a search? Press Win-F1; enter nslookup...
Usually you would use nslookup in a cmd window with a site name.
Each time it will also show you the IP address of the DNS server it used
to get whatever it found (or didn't find.)
In fact, if you just Run... nslookup (e.g. press Win-R and enter that)
it will show you the DNS server address in a new cmd window,
so you don't even have to know how to get a standard command prompt. ; )
So, do that with both your connection cases and see if you are using
a different DNS each time...
You could actually go further and try to simulate your (assumed) problem
with the lookup for your home page. Tip: use the set debug subcommand
of nslookup to get more detail for the actual lookup in each case.
If you see reference to the sedo.com site (instead of a failed lookup)
you could have an explanation for your symptom.
Good luck

Hello,
Has anyone seen this before?
Always disclose the OS involved. This has little to do with IE,
more to do with the networking setup and probably a DNS issue.
E.g. I suspect you aren't using the same DNS in both cases.
Use nslookup to check.

I have a user that when she connects to the internet through a wireless card
at home through Comcast. When she clicks on IE 6, she should recieve an
error that the page could not be displayed because she is not connecting to
the network through VPN, but what she gets is re-directed to SEDO.COM. She
can change the address and get to other sites after this. I have searched
the registry and ran spyware software and still cannot find why this page
comes up everytime. When she connects to VPN, she does get the correct home
page. Thanks for any help.

Why am I always being told that I'm working offline in IE7 when I'm not?
It's keeping me from getting to any webpages because I'm always being asked
to first connect...meanwhile, everything else that could only work perfectly
IF I were connected to the Net IS working just fine!?
I've recently been getting messages like "Webpage unavailable while
offline," which I'm not (connected wirelessly with Intel 3945 PRO internal),
and when I press "Connect" to get rid of the message, I'm presented with a
Dialup dialog which tries to dial through my Conexant modem, which I
needless to say never use!
I've tried to solve this by deleting the WAN mini-port icon in Control Panel
and disabling the modem, but the messages continue to appear, rendering my
IE7 useless because I can't connect without the messages appearing...
BTW, this message problem does not appear to be happening in Mozilla
Firefox...
|
Does IE clue in if you use it immediately after those other browsers work?
Alternatively you could try using telnet or Fiddler2 (e.g. with its Request
Builder) to simulate IE's request. If so, I suspect there's a tuning problem
in your networking, e.g. you may not really have a complete Internet connection
all the time, so if it has to be re-established there may be a delay doing that
which those other apps are more tolerant of. IE unfortunately has an obsolete
feature (AutoScan) which it still tries to support for compatibility and I think that
things like that (which AFAIK are not tunable) mean that your symptom may
occur in some cases.

Can someone please help? I think this started to happen when I was bumbling
along with Wi Fi a couple of weeks ago.
What's up with this "You are working offline" message I'm getting in IE??
How can I get it back to working properly?? THANK YOIU!
|
Please provide an exact transcription of the message you are seeing.
As I implied such messages are usually an indication that IE checked
the interface and didn't find a usable Internet connection. FWIW the same
thing happens to me more often with Help and Support (e.g. press Win-F1,
use the Support menu) and its Get Help from Microsoft link; so that app is
obviously is even more intolerant of whatever the conditions are that make
apps think that there isn't an Internet connection.
BTW if you see the same symptom with the Help and Support Center
then your problem is clearly not just with IE; so you may get more informed
help from a newsgroup which specializes in networking for your OS.
Cross-posting to it for convenience.
Good luck

| Quote: | Hey all. There used to be a tool called "traceie" that you could use
to log every url a web browser session accesses. It looks like the
company that developed that is out of business, and while I can get a
copy of the tool downloaded I cant get the free eval license the tool
requires because theres no one to get the license from anymore.
Is there a similar tool that I can use? I am trying to avoid full
blown sniffers, and ietrace was perfect because it jut showed your
local browser session traffic is a very simple interface.
|
Was it implemented as a proxy? Fiddler2 is not what I would call
"a full blown sniffer" but it does do more than just list URLs.
The only disadvantage is that it is implemented as a proxy.

I need to do this to trace site addresses to unlock in a whitelist for
a very secure kiosk machine.

If you just want to record addresses you could try TCPView
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/TcpView.mspx
BTW you might get a more informed answer by posting in a newsgroup
specializing in networking for your OS. Cross-posting to XP Networking
(my OS) for example.

updated my antivirus and spyware and all worked fine until I
recieved a Windows update which restarted my PC over-night. During
the next day my PC froze completely (mouse pointer included) and
after rebooting all listings of my network connections were
erased.
Since then I have been unable to reconnect to the internet as my
PC can no longer find any network cards. I have manually removed
and replaced my wireless card and also physically connected to my
router via ethernet cable. My PC does not recognize any of this
and the device manager does not have any listing of my wireless
network card at all. I have utilized both System Restore and a
drive reformat with no success. My wireless card is a Buffalo Air
Station and is less than a year old. I have had no other problems
with it before. If I attempt to install the card driver from the
CD I must manually find the specific file on the disk and then I
recieve an error message that the device cannot be started [code
10]. Add Hardwear cannot detect the card, even if I shut down and
remove or replace it. It is as if my entire PC forgot everything
about networking.
Some of the steps I have tried are from self-help tips online,
this seemed like it would help
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/825826 (I only
completed up to step 10 as more than just the dial-up connection
is missing). Nearly everything I have tried relies on the card
being detected by the system, which it suddenly refuses to do now.
I can see no physical damage to the card itself or the area it
connects to the rest of the board. Should I continue with the
steps in the guide? How can I reconnect my wireless card so it cna
be detected?

Don't know if you've tried this...
Open the device manager, then right-click on the computer icon at the
top of the list and select "Scan for Hardware Changes"
If that doesn't work, try plugging your wireless card into another
computer to see if that computer recognizes the card. If it doesn't,
then you might have a bad card.

Hi
You problem is pre networking.
I.e. if the Wireless card's drivers are Not installed there is No roll for
networking to even start.
Make sure that you do not have any residual Ghost,
http://www.ezlan.net/faq.html#ghost
Log to Buffalo's support download the latest File that fits your OS and try
again.
http://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/
As for Networking per-se, http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html
