Hi
I have 2 Xbox360 consoles in the house, both connected via a router on
the Virgin Media 20 meg service (UK). They both connect to live at the
same time no problems at all. The issue I have is that if we try to
play the same game on Live together (eg PGR3) then it comes up with an
error. I presume because we both have the same IP address.
This is really annoying, I know we can system link but it is better with
loads of other Live players.
Does anyone know a way round this. I have been googling for an answer
for ages and can't find this specific issue. It always comes back with
using one Live account for 2 consoles.
The only thing I can think of is using a dual IP service, I know before
Virgin Media took over Telewest that they did this years ago when Live
was first introduced on the original Xbox but not sure if VM are still
doing it, plus it cost £5 a month !!! Would rather have a "free" way of
doing it.
Thanks,
Mark. |

The Xbox Live system blocks same-IP connections. You need to have two
separate IP addresses for playing, which prevents people from logging on at
the same location and then dominating the games.

Just a quick reply as im off to work.
Both xbox's with the same IP adress? Probably not as it's like two people
occupiying the exact same space. That doesn't sound right for a start as I
was always told you can't have two PC's / consols on line at the same time
with the same address. If your running a network and have DHCP enabled on
your PC, both xbox's should pick up different IP addresses. Look to go
wireless as this is easier to set up and smoother.
Also, are you using two game disk's?
I have an xbox, laptop, and three PC's on the same network, all with
different IP addresses.

What error? Do you have a firewall?
I just finished building out my home theater and I'm about to put my 360
on the Internet for the first time. Should be interesting to see how it
goes.

Thanks for the replies. both consoles have their own LAN IP addresses |
given by the router but obviously the WAN IP given by my cable provider
is the same for both consoles. So when logging onto Live that WAN IP
will be used (We have a similar thing with our PC's, for example 2 PC's
i our house cannot both join the same table at Party Poker).
We both have Live Gold accounts and both have seperate game discs !!!
I can't exactly remember the wording of the error but it was something
like htis game cannot be joined. |

Dominating them how? I just got to connect my 360 to the Internet and

picture of how Live operates.

I had the same question and I'm glad to see it addressed here in the
forums. A friend and I want to get together and play (okay, "dominate"
if you want) Forza 2 online but at the same location. Guess that's not
going to fly. |

I used to have this issue with both my PC and my Console having the
same IP address. THis prevented the XBOX from connecting to LIVE
automatically when I turn it on. I used to always have to boot up my
PC, connect to the internet first before I can turn on my 360 to get
connected. I stumbled on the solution: I had a duplicate MAC address
setting on my router....I removed the duplicate setting and now tada
my 360 can connect to Live on its own now and my PC and the 360 now
both have seperate IP addresses. Perhaps you could try resetting your
router and removing any additonal unecessary MAC settings and try to
connect both consoles to see if it works. Caveat, I don't know if my
issue is related to your issue but there is no harm trying right? Let
me know how it turns out. |

Not the same issue. Your problem was within your own Local Area Network, on
"your" side of the Internet. When a PC and an Xbox 360 are connected to the
Internet at the same time, they're both representing the IP address (on the
Internet side) as provided by your Internet Service Provider. The ISP
assigns a single (although it may be rotating) IP address for your
"connection" to the world. Two Xbox 360's on the same router through the
same ISP, will have the same IP address on the Internet side.

I gathered that. What I'm wondering is how having 2 consoles share the
same IP address would provide an advantage. If anything, I would think it
would prove to be a disadvantage by slowing down local communications
amongst other things.

It's not hard to imagine people cheating on an internet gaming
service. It's not a matter of if or when, but how people will cheat.
You do want to have that in consideration, although the concept of
preferred players versus unwanted players should help a bit as long as
people use that feature.
