Thanks you so much for the link to Microsoft that explains this email in
depth to me. The example it shows in the site is the exact one I received,
except for the fact it has been updated with the year 2007 at the bottom,
instead of 2003 in the example. I wish this was easier to find, as I believe
many people will be duped by this, as it looks so official. I am going to
pass this particular link to the page to my friends so that they are not
swept into this dangerous scam.
|I received a suspicious email from Microsoft, and even my Live Hotmail didn't
| like the attached download links, and it said in a roughly stated note, that
| I had to download and install this: "December 2007, Cumulative Patch"
|
| The email had this message:
|
| "Microsoft Customer
|
| this is the latest version of security update, the "December 2007,
| Cumulative Patch" update which resolves all known security vulnerabilities
| affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express as well as
| three newly discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to protect your computer
| from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow an
| malicious user to run code on your computer. This update includes the
| functionality of all previously released patches."
|
| There are 3 attachments, which the email security stated: "Windows Live
| Hotmail has blocked some attachments in this mail because they appear unsafe."
|
| Question: If this is a needed update, for security reasons, why doesn't
| this run in the automatic mode like all the other updates and patches? Even
| after going to the Windows update page, and running the search for needed
| updates, this didn't show up, and is not found in the update history of the
| XP system. Is this a real email or a hoax getting me to install malicious
| codes?

Still get the above error when trying to use windowsupdate. My AV
is Windows Live OneCare, which I've had for over a year and up to about 3
weeks ago never had a problem using windowsupdate.

So, another firewall can be added to the list. Unfortunately, I do not
think this emerging issue of 0x80072EE7 is strictly related to which fw
is being employed.

Oops. I didn't realize that was a firewall too. I guess its name implies that
though. Then, my standard question would be: does it have any diagnostics
in it which would let them trace the packet flows? If not, use netcap but unless
the firewall is completely transparent for WU traffic that may not show you what
IE is seeing. Inserting Fiddler2 between IE and the firewall would at least
let them see the HTTP traffic and some HTTPS.

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 with all critical updates installed
via Microsoft Update. I use an Administrator account and have Automatic
Updates set to "automatic" to download and install the recommended updates.
Recently when I powered on and there was the "updates ready to install"
notification in the tray for a patch to MS07-069.

If this patch was a critical update whey did I receive this prompt when I
have AU set to automatically download and install the update? It did not
require an OK on a EULA.

Long story short I've been all over the Vista forum and support and I've been
told that Update KB933928 put my laptop into a Mod-Auth tamper state. I'm not
sure what that means but if I log on to my laptop I get a box with an X and
it lets me either open only my internet explorer or it logs me off. So I only
have access to internet explorer, to get anything else I need to go on in
safe mode. I was told the solution to my problem is to uninstall KB933928 and
then reinstall it but it wont let me uninstall it. I get this message when I
try: update could not be fully uninstalled! I was able to uninstall other
updates earlier because I thought they were the problem but now I can't
uninstall the update that is apparently the problem.

Please help me, I need my laptop working again before school starts and If I
can't find a solution I'm going to either pirate a copy of Vista or turn it
into a Linux laptop...
stopped working or are no longer recognized by there computer. .

First if you deleted the upper and lower filters like microsoft tells you
to, put them back this only makes the problem worse.
I have noticed that they also don't tell you to make a backup of your
registry before you delete them but a system restore should bring them back.
Once that is done or if you don't have to do that then

Second go to control panel, programs and features. On the left side of the
window click on view installed updates.
Under microsoft windows there should be a list of 49 or so updates
(depending on when you read this).
start uninstalling your "Update for microsoft windows" listings one by one
restarting and testing the drive after each one until you find the one that
solves the problem. you may want to shut off the automatic updates or you
will just have to do this over again later. Rebooting to vista from scratch
works because you are starting fresh without the updates.
I believe that it is the compatibility update that started this problem to
begin with (KB932246 being most recent and KB929427 being the earliest.)
write down each one before uninstalling it so you know what works and what
doesn't .
as far as how to stop it from happening again you would have to run your
windows update manually to make sure not to install the update again. If you
do have this problem just go back and delete the update again. Good luck Hope
this works for you like it did for me.

Here is the reg hack to fix the issue associate. I created a script to push
this remotely to a list of computers:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif]
"Content Type"="image/tiff"
"PerceivedType"="image"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif\MSPaper.Document]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif\MSPaper.Document\ShellNew]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif\OpenWithList]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif\OpenWithList\MSPVIEW.EXE]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif\OpenWithProgids]
"TIFImage.Document"=hex(0):

Just copy and paste this in to a text file and save with a name of your
choice, change the extention to .reg and your good to go.
I have no idea how to solve this problem, but it is absurd that Microsoft's
Is there a patch or anything else available which will enable us to get the
If not, is it possible to uninstall office 2003 and re-install it without SP
Hi,

I was having the same problem as described above after installing
service pack 3 for office. However, I had a different computer that
did not have SP 3 installed yet.

Here's what I did:

1. On the computer that is experiencing the error: Go to C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI. Inside
is a folder called 11.0.
2. Rename that folder to 11.0new (or whatever you want to call it).
3. Find a computer that does not have service pack 3. Go to C:
\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI and copy the folder
called 11.0
4. Paste the folder 11.0 into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\MODI on the computer that was experiencing problems.

This solved the problem for me.
| getting a failed status. when i check to see why in the update history it
| shows error code of 800f0826. and from the day before it showed error code
| 80246007. I have windows vista basic 32-bit os. I have even tried to get the
| direct download from the update site and I am getting the same errors. Its
| getting real annoying having it tell me that there's an important update to
| install and yet it won't do it.

                                      Thank you!

As you noted, it appears that 946627 fixes the issue (for 942615 which I
miskeyed in the original post). We will test this asap. Looks like I should
have checked back there one more time before I posted in the forums.

As a side note, the sp3 beta (thanks for the clarification) that we tried
caused the same urlmon.dll issue. I thought the same thing as you mentioned,
but was surprised when we got the failure results on our test platforms.
Is there a fix yet for the IE6 crash issue caused by KB924615? It appears
that the patch is automatically included in the SP3 RC, and cannot be
removed. Any idea whether a fix for the KB924615 URLMON.dll issue will be
published by the time SP3 is final-released, or will we have to forego
installation of the service pack? Upgrading to IE7 is currently not an
option.

Alternatively, is there a workaround for the patch that actually works,
other than uninstalling it? We need something that could be quickly
implemented, and distributed centrally to hundreds of machines.

I've seen this patch pop up on numerous other forums, so much so that it
made the tech headlines on Google news and PC World, so I know we're not the
only ones who have seen the issue...

Thank you!
1. XP sp3 is a beta.
2. XP sp3 should be putting you back on the GDR bits and thus should
not cause this crash
3. Yes there is a fix out now and it's on Microsoft update.
Nothing to be sorry about, you didn't create this issue <w
Let's give this a shot ...
show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir

Open the WuRedir subfolder. How many folders are in there ?
I'm hoping 2 ...
Now open the folders and check the Created and Modified Dates of the
wuredir.xml files by right clicking them and choosing Properties.

Please post back with the Created and Modified dates and how many
folders are present in WuRedir.

I think the issue is that the update server is checking the validity of
the wuredir and wsus3setup.cabs and for some reason, the system is not
sending a response to back to the update server. The update server than
appears to be attempting to download the .cabs to the system but fails
to do so due to the 0x80072EE7 error.

BTW, who is your ISP ?
