|
|
Hi,
Windows Network with SBS2003 Server, 10 Win XP SP2 Dell PCs. 3 Com
Network Hub, Draytek ADSL Router.
I have a really strange problem and wonder if you have any ideas.
2 of my customers at the same time, but seperate locations have
started experiencing router crashes in the last 2 days. They lose the
broadband and are unable to access the Router Status/configurator
Screen or Ping the Router. A switch off is required to get everything
back. Then after a short time it happens again.
At first I assumed they were both experiencing an ADSL problem, but
the ISP ran checks and said everything was OK. Still thought it was a
BB problem as that was the common factor (same ISP/regional location).
I then removed all the PCs from the network and started adding them
one by one, until I discovered that the router crashed when a
particular PC was loading Windows XP (while applying system settings
before it logs on)
I have run AV & Spyware checks and it has come out clean.
I am not on site, but with one of the users I have disabled all the
startup items, but the router still crashes when windows is loading.
I have disabled all the services and the Router does NOT crash, but of
course the network services do not load, but prob shows that it is not
simply a network card problem. I have tried a different cable and
network point.
I am in the process of individually disabling services to try and
locate the offending item, but this is a long and difficult process
and I will probably end up trying to reinstall XP.
I wonder if you have come across anything similar or if you have any
ideas for further troubleshooting before I clear it out.
Kind regards,
Richard Naef |

OK, I have disabled services one by one and ended up pointing the
finger at AutoUpdates & Background Intelligent Transfer.
I will call MS to ask them if they know what is going on.

Despite the fact that one machine seems to crash your router, a router
should not crash due to anything any machine does on the network.
Perhaps this is a known problem and your router manufacturer has
provided firmware update to solve it. Check their website and see if
there is a newer firmware update for your router:
