Is it possible to prevent the screensaver from initiating when I am watching
a television programme on my PC?

Set your power scheme to presentation mode should do that.

Right click your desktop
select properties
select screensaver tab
click power (at the bottom right)
select presentation from the power schemes dropdown box
click ok

Just set the screensaver to None, that way it wont come on again until you
go back and set one again.
