Okay, thanks everybody for comments. I have agreed with the general
consensus for the most part and have avoided the use of such "cleaners" but
performance has become so poor and remained that way despite cache control
and defrag and so on that Ive started reaching for straws.

Lots of good advice and referrals for me to read and troubleshooting
methodologies to try... keep me busy until next year at least eh? ;-)

I
also did a AVG virus scan to find that something has been

Microsoft did the updates..."shell.32.dll has changed."
Also something
about "Boot error of C Disk Error." I don't know if these
are viruses or

in safe mode
and
found nothing, I also uninstalled Norton which I don't
use--I was told not
to use 2 anti-virus programs. Plus the subscription to
Norton was out of

but haven't done a proper scan yet--one is scheduled to

I had a brief thought of doing a non-destructive system

Cheer and Happy Christmas.

Using autostreamer and Nero, my slipstreamed XP w/SP2 CD is 576MB.

My OEM generic XP W/sp1 installation CD is 522MB.
The SP2 CD that I received from MS is 476MB. No, the CDs are not
additive
arithmetically when slipstreaming.

As it appears now, a slipstreamed SP3 to XP may require a DVD. We'll
see.

Hmmm, interesting that your slipstreamed SP2 CD was 576MB vs MS size of
476MB (which is SMALLER than XP with SP1 !!!

Did they leave something out?

Not all programs follow that convention. My email client, Thunderbird,
will close with Ctrl-Q, but no other programs I have will. Alt-F4 will
close most.

It is not the Registry slowing your system down. Find the culprit which is most likely a form of malware. DO NOT use any registry cleaners. It is a snake oil fix and is not needed.

The problem isn't that I want CTRL-Q to close things, I DON'T want it to
close things.. and according to the <a
href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301583">Lists</a> of defaults out there
CTRL-Q isn't supposed to do anything.

You can easily test that. I'm surprised that you haven't.

Unfortunately, its not so easy to test that. I need the data on these
drives to do my day to day work (so I'm really hoping that the problem
is not that I have too many devices, as remedying that will be very
painful) and since the problems are only intermittent its not simply a
matter of unplugging a few devices, rebooting the computer, and seeing
what's what. I have to wait for the problem to occur and its not
entirely clear to me how long I need things to work (all the while not
being able to access some of my data) before I can assume that
whatever config I'm testing. So its a bit daunting to start down that
path without any inkling at all that that's the correct path to
explore. On the other hand, if someone told me "hey, that's way too
many devices" and explained why, then that's certainly the path I'd
take.

I do have access to a 2nd PC, but I was hoping that there was a way to avoid
a reformat/restore. I would think that there has to be a way to find the
offending file/driver/service.....

Background information on Stop Error code:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797159.aspx

This occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode
subsystem, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem
(CSRSS), is compromised. Security can no longer be guaranteed. Because
Win XP can't run without Winlogon or CSRSS, this is one of the few
situations where the failure of a user-mode service can cause the system
to stop responding. This Stop message also can occur as a result of
malware infestation or when the computer is restarted after a system
administrator has modified permissions so that the SYSTEM account no
longer has adequate permissions to access system files and folders.
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

Do you have data you wish to recover. Do you have acces to a second
computer preferably a desktop? Putting the problematic drive in the
second computer as a slave may be the best way to backup your data. You
can then use the recovery partition to restore the PC to factory
condition.

Hope this helps.

I have a Windows XP Media Center PC that is giving me a STOP:
0xc000021a error every time I try to boot it up, either in Safe or
Normal Mode. The error says "The Windows Logon Process system
process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000020
(0x00000000 0x00000000). I have tried booting using Last Known Good
Configuration, but that does not help. Norton Partition Magic I
believe caused this error, as I was trying to move some free space
from one partition to another on my PC. I can access the data on the
drive, but it just will not boot. I have looked at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;156669 but I
am not sure that will help me, as I cannot boot the PC, therefore I
cannot set Dr. Watson as the default debugger or use the userdump.exe
tool either. Any ideas as to what I can do to figure out how to fix
this? The PC is a Sony Vaio that did not come with recovery disks,
just a recovery partition that will restore the PC to factory
condition, which I really do not want to do if I can help it. From
what I am reading, it appears to be a problem with the winlogon.exe
failing, but I am not sure how I can fix this. Any ideas would be
appreciated. Thanks for any help.

Your request for help sat here unanswered for two days before I
finally jumped in. I'd bet that no one here has EVER had that many
devices... especially that many external hard drives - attached to a
computer.

I'm afraid you've no choice BUT to experiment with disconnecting items
and seeing if it makes a difference.

How large are the external drives? Given the size of drives available
today, if they're all small drives, they can easily be replaced by
fewer large drives.

windows still complains.:

Windows is installed on C: and programs on D:

How do i get to boot from the E:\ , sys partition??
