How can this be done? My primary problem to start with is how do I talk to
the BIOS/HDD to get me the S.M.A.R.T. info??? Getting at least the
temperature of the drive would be a start...
thanks

You can use a program like Speedfan to display the SMART information |
along with a bunch of other useful information on the computer. |

Here are two utilities that are worth looking into if you want more info
about S.M.A.R.T.
SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
The SMART tab displays current smart info on the drive you select and at
your option provides an on-line analysis of the drive.
HD Tune:
HD Tune, provides drive info and has an option to test your drive.
For S.M.A.R.T. status click on the 'Health' tab.

Chris
I endorse JS's recommendation of HD Tune. Excellent freeware programme.

Yeah, I've already know about HD Tune... I'd been alternating between using
it, and HardDriveInspectorPro for a few months. I stopped using HD Tune
because very occasionaly it would crash. HardDriveInspectorPro has only
crashed one time in the many months I've been using it on my 4 machines at
my desk, it was on a machine where all the other programs were screwing up
in different ways, making me decide to reboot the machine
I've emailed the writer of SpeedFan about my desire to silently be putting
some or all of the stats into WMI, with the user not having anything from
the program in the system tray... hopefully he can put that on his "to do"
list...

What machine are you using, and does it support using the DEL key on
boot-up to get into the BIOS setup? Also, what version and type of BIOS is
available on your machine (i.e. is it Phoenix, Award or AMI)? This may have
a bearing on your problem, so please declare.
Regards,
Philip |
