Win Xp Professional
Pentium 4
1.80 GHZ
768 RAM
OEM
I have an odd problem... please bear with me.
This past summer I purchased this computer off ebay. It (was) a Great
computer for its age and it was neatly refurbished. Work fantastic. ( I
think it was a college campus computer) Anyways. I was aware of the
dangers of OEM products (had no extra software for OS) and played around
with the back up utilities that it contained which seemed to work out ok
but didnt seem to back up fully. Well recently I stumbled upon Norton
Ghost 10.0 ( thats where i went wrong someone said) Retail that was
supposed to be able to make a full clone of the OS, files, and settings
onto a new hard drive. I tried the product out and it appeared to do
the job. Exact copy was on new drive. I set the settings to "bootable
drive" and set the jumpers accordingly.
When I tried the new HD the system wouldn't go past the windows startup
(blue screen with the windows xp professional logo). I figured i messed
up and would try again. Welll when i hooked up the original hard
drive.... All heck went loose. (system 32 error this. missing file
that) I uninstalled ghost and "tried" to use the xp recovery program and
the sysdtem wouldnt load recovery due to error or couldnt find it..
(leads me to next problem.) well i tried to reboot the system and now i
have the same problem with the orignal hard drive as the other only i
can get to the desktop (after 10 minutes or so) but nothing happeens
after that...
Finally i was able to dig up my dead emachines recovery disk to
reformat my empty HD so i could ask you this long question.
Am I doomed to lose Microsoft XP Professional on that hard disk or is
there yet a way to bring it back to life? I can still access the files
thru using it as a slave.
Pls feel free to ask me any questions if i dint explani enough.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Is the problem pc an emachine...If not, then those cds will not work with
any other machine.Other than rechecking the BIOS for proper boot
configuration,
thiers not much you can do w/o a xp cd,as for the old hd,reformat it when you
get a xp cd (retail),and an OS....As for imaging or ghosting youre hds in the
future,xp already has that capability:XCOPY You'll probably find the cmd
to use
it here, with search...

Provided you followed the instructions cloning your HD in the origonal PC
should have given rise to no problems.
The only problem that might have appeared would be if your origonal drive
was ide and the new one was sata, connected to a raid port.
If you put your origonal HD back and you then received errors, I would
suspect either jumper settings, bad connection with the hd cable, or
something else that you inadvertantly disturbed.

The problem Pc is not the Emachine. The HD i am using was used
previously for an emachine but when i got my new computer i wiped this
HD and used for storage. Now that i am having problems again... i used
my reformat cds to reinstall my Emachine software..
I noticed after waiting for my XP pro to load up... about 5 minutes...
it will go to desktop as i may have said be fore.... I pressed CTRL +
Alt + Dlte and I still get the task manager. The system appears to be
on idle at 98-99% I am still able to browse sytem files by clicking
start new task option. Is there a way to acces system recovery from
that point?
Thanks! |

If you are using Emachine software / recovery on a none Emachine I would be
surprised if it worked.
Is this what you are doing & exactly what are you installing?
