I had 1GB RAM in my desktop system, and I had no problems putting my system
into hibernation.

I installed an additional 1GB memory stick, brining my total system RAM to
2GB. I tried to put my computer into hibernation as usual, but the system
beeped and did not hibernate. I tried to hibernate again, and I found that
the hibernate option was missing from the shutdown menu. I still had
Standby, but Hibernate was gone.

I went to the Power Options dialog to re-enable Hibernation, but the
Hibernate tab is now missing from the dialog.

I checked HIBERFIL.SYS - it is still there, and it is 2GB, which I think
would be the right size after my memory upgrade.

Any ideas on how I can get the Hibernate tab again, so I can re-enable
hibernation on my system?

Thanks for any help.

Does the hibernate reappear if you remove the extra memory?

If so, does it remain if you substitute the new memory for the old?

If so, does it remain if you put the old stick back in the second position
(i.e. you have swapped the ticks from your starting point)?

If so, then sorted.

If not, then I would suggest that the combination of the 2 memory sticks is
somehow incompatible with hibernation. Try 2 sticks from the same supplier
as the new one that you obtained.

Remove the additional RAM *and* do system restore to a state
before you added it.
Then the hibernation tab shoud be visible and you can try again.

To tell why exactly hibernation failed with the additional RAM,
you need some tools from Driver development kit
or Hardware compatibility test kit.... in other words, there's no too much
help :(

Hibernation mode is not available if PAE mode is enabled to provide
access to increased memory. Check the boot.ini file to see if /PAE
was added to the line used to specify where is the OS that gets
loaded. PAE mode gets enabled if you add more than 2GB of memory but
maybe you added it to the boot.ini file.

and also read and maybe try the download at:

If you enable the old APM mode in BIOS, the power options in Windows
will be reduced. Make sure the BIOS has ACPI (Advanced Configuration
Power Interface) mode selected for power savings. In the Power
Options applet in Windows, check if you see an APM tab. You don't
want an APM tab because you want ACPI support.
