I have been advised to look for problem add-ins in the Word Start-up folder,
but there's nothing in the folder at all. How can that be? Am I doint
something wrong?

No, you aren't doing something wrong.

Problems in Word often -- but not always -- have something to do with
add-ins. That means that checking for add-ins is an important step in
troubleshooting.

The fact that you didn't see any files in the Startup folder can mean
one of two things: either the problem (whatever it is) isn't related
to add-ins, or you might have some add-ins that aren't located in the
Startup folder.

This article explains the different kinds of add-ins and how to look
for them:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx

If you reach the end of the suggestions there without finding
anything, then the problem isn't being caused by an add-in, so you'd
have to look for other causes.

I assume you described your problem in another post, but because you
started a new thread I don't have any way to find it and read about
the problem. Please keep all your related posts in one thread by

Thanks for the advice on posts. Yes, I posted before on this problem, but am
new in the community. I appreciate your patience. My previous posts are
below:

Incompatible legacy third party add-in. Start Word in Safe Mode: from Start,
Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word start and close OK now? If yes, check the
contents of the Word Start-up folder. Rename any *.dot files found to *.bad
and then try starting Word normally. If it is OK now, rename the *.dot files
back to *.dot until you find the one causing the problems.

When I open Word 2007 using Vista, I can type on the page, but the scroll
bars are frozen, and no other functionality is available. I cannot move
the
cursor on the page, change font etc.

On closing, the message is "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working"
followed by "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then the
program restarts in an endless cycle of crashing and restarting.

I have removed and reinstalled the program to no avail. PowerPoint and
Outlook work fine.

Any ideas?

What happened when you started in Safe Mode? Did Word work correctly?
