My laptop recently had to have everything re-installed. Now when I try to
establish a remote desktop connection with my home computer I get the
connection screen with my administrator name on the home computer listed but
I cannot enter the password successfully and make the connection. I think I
have forgotten what password I used. How can I recover it or establish a new
name and password for the connection to work?

See these for possible help. You need to do these procedures while at home.
Once you get that squared away make sure you write down your passwords and
keep them in a safe place. You really should consider only logging into a XP
PC via Remote Desktop as a limited user versus an administrator if possible.
You can then use "Run As" if you need admin privileges. In all cases use a
strong password.
