I have Works 8.5 OEM running on a laptop. My desktop documents are all Word
..doc created in Word within Works Suite 2002 and I'd like to stay with the
Word format and file extensions.
The problem is that the Works Word Processor running on the laptop doesn't
seem to have a way of making it save as x.doc by default - you have to go
into the menu and select it each time.
Does anyone know of a fix for this irritating feature of the Works WP?
I know I could install OpenOffice on the laptop but there happen to be some
Word features which I'd like to continue using.
I appreciate any advice on this.

There is no way I know of to achieve this, within Works, though a
macro/keystroke recorder program could probably be
used to achieve the same aim.

The Works word processor doesn't include a macro recorder. I thought about
using a Windows macro prog e.g. Keyboard Express, but there isn't a keyboard
command for Save As that it could call. Using Save just brings up a dialog
box telling you the document will be saved as a .wps and that you need to
use Save As, so you're back where you started.

All menus can be operated by keystrokes.

Note that each menu has an underlined character. For File, it is the F.
So ALT+F will open the File Menu.

Once a menu is open, each item has an underlined character. No alt key
is used at this point. For Save As the A is underlined.

So

ALT+F
A
will open the File, Save As dialog.

This works in all Microsoft programs.

Yes that brings up the Save As dialog. Unfortunately it then always defaults
to the .wps filename which isn't the same as the one press or click to save
as a .doc which I had originally.

Try these keystrokes.

Alt, F, S, Tab, (down arrow) as many times as required, Enter, Enter.

Or

Cntr+S, tab, (down arrow) as many times as required, Enter, Enter.

Thanks -- that works fine in vitro. I'll install my macro applet on the
laptop and give it a go.
