For over 2 weeks I have seen an "install updates" shield on the close button
when closing down. When I then start up again I am told that 82 updates
could not be installed. I have tried to install manually with no success but
obviously these updates are important. How can I delete the errant updates
and supposedly start again? Or can another "fix" be suggested?

Does this help
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
